Bandits and Monarchs in Cup action this weekend
The Berwick "KLS" Bandits are up against the Edinburgh Monarchs twice in two days as the sides tussle to gain entry into the SGB Championship Knock Out Cup Semi Final with their two-legged quarter final starting on Friday night at Armadale (7.30pm) and the deciding leg on Saturday at Shielfield Park at 7.00pm.
It is only two weeks since the sides completed their Shield group matches, when the Bandits sent the Monarchs back to the north side of the Border having beaten them soundly 53-27, but Friday will prove a tougher task indeed as Bandits' team manager Scott Courtney explained: "We are still suffering from a less than impressive record at Edinburgh, but looking at positives, even though we lost up there in the Shield, the 51-39 defeat means we did beat them on aggregate and in the Knockout Cup aggregate is king.
"We had wondered if Edinburgh may make changes between our last match two weeks ago and now, but they've only dropped on, in Coty Garcia, bringing in former Glasgow and Newcastle rider, Victor Palovaara, the 24-year-old Swede, who has shown good form, but not on a consistent basis, so as he'll feel a little ring-rusty at the moment, hopefully we can catch him cold this weekend.
"Our guys are again at full strength and as ever after some less-than-tactful publicity that came from Armadale when our Jye Ethridge left their employment a couple of years ago which only means the guy wants to prove more and more to them that he is a class act, which of course we at Berwick know to our great benefit. Its local derby cup action, and this weekend we're on for some riveting hot on-track action the fans are going to love!"
